Georgios M. Kontakis is a Professor of Orthopedics and the Rector of the University of Crete.
He is the Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at the University General Hospital of Heraklion.
He has previously served as the Dean of the Medical School at the University of Crete.
He has undergone advanced training in new techniques for shoulder and spinal surgery at various specialized university centers and hospitals in Europe and the United States, including:

His research interests focused on fracture healing, shoulder surgery, and spinal surgery.
He has 109 publications in peer-reviewed international journals (Google Scholar citations: 5602, h-index: 42, i10-index: 77), 10 contributions as an author in chapters of international books, and participation in translating abstracts of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons into Greek.
He has participated as an invited speaker at international and Greek scientific conferences and seminars and has served as a reviewer, upon invitation, for international journals and editorial series.
▪ Rector of the University of Crete, from September 1, 2020, to the present.
▪ Dean of the Medical School of the University of Crete (two terms: September 1, 2014, to August 31, 2018, and September 1, 2018, to August 27, 2020).
▪ Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at the University General Hospital of Heraklion, from September 10, 2012, to the present. The clinic serves as a referral center for the Crete health region for shoulder, spinal, and pelvic conditions and injuries, as well as complex trauma cases.
▪ Director of the Postgraduate Program “Surgical Sciences” at the Medical School of the University of Crete (2019 to 2022).
▪ Director of the “Orthopedic Research Laboratory” in the Department of Surgery at the Medical School of the University of Crete.
▪ Deputy Administrator of the University General Hospital of Heraklion (2012 to 2013).
▪ President of the Shoulder-Elbow Surgery Department of the Hellenic Association of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology for two years (2010 to 2011).
▪ Served for many years as an elected faculty member of the Assembly of the Medical School and as a member of the Senate of the University of Crete, in his capacity as Dean of the School.
